SALT LAKE CITY, UT (See It or Skip It) – Back in 2008, Speed Racer hit theaters with visuals and energy unlike anything audiences had really seen before. At the time, the movie struggled to connect with mainstream audiences, but over the years, the Wachowskis’ colorful, emotionally sincere racing epic has developed a passionate cult following. Now, nearly two decades later, the film is racing back into the spotlight with a brand new 4K restoration release.
I sat down with Emile Hirsch to talk about the movie’s changing legacy, why audiences finally seem to be embracing it, and what fans can expect from seeing the film in the new 4K restoration.
It’s so great getting to talk to you about this. We rarely get to revisit cult movies like this, especially with a major 4K rerelease. Nearly 20 years have passed since “Speed Racer” first hit theaters. It didn’t necessarily connect with mainstream audiences at the time, but it clearly developed a huge cult following afterward. When did you start noticing that shift happening in your day-to-day life?
Emile Hirsch:
You know, I was thinking about this a little earlier. I was asking myself, “When did this happen? When did ‘Speed Racer’ suddenly become a movie people were defending?” If you go on YouTube and search “Speed Racer great movie,” there are thousands of videos talking about why it’s not only a great movie, but one of the best movies of the century. It’s gone from being a movie that bombed when it first came out, critics and audiences both panned it, to suddenly having this massive shift in opinion. I’ve honestly never seen anything quite like it.
I think it’s a real testament to how powerful the film is, not just technologically, but emotionally too. There’s a real lack of cynicism in “Speed Racer.” There’s an emotional wholesomeness to it. A lot of modern superhero movies have this layer of self-awareness or humor where they almost make fun of themselves in order to seem cool.
“Speed Racer” didn’t have any of that. Speed completely meant every word he said. He believed in everything he was fighting for. I think especially now, in this day and age, that sincerity really resonates with people.
You can definitely see influences from “Speed Racer” in a lot of today’s anime adaptations and stylized blockbuster filmmaking. It almost feels like the movie just arrived before audiences were ready for it.
Emile Hirsch:
Absolutely. Even with James Gunn’s Superman, which I thought was wonderful, you can see some influence there for sure. That ultra imaginative visual aesthetic, that big swing creatively, “Speed Racer” was really doing that years earlier.
With this new 4K restoration, is there a specific scene or race you’re especially excited to revisit?
Emile Hirsch:
When I saw the new version in IMAX at the TCL Chinese Theatre, it was honestly one of the most mindblowing experiences I’ve ever had in a theater, and I’m not just saying that because I’m in the movie. It felt like stepping into another world. All the races hit differently. Thunderhead, Fuji Helexicon, Casa Cristo, the Grand Prix, every single one had these incredible new notes and textures to them.
The colors were already brilliant in the original movie, but now imagine they spent months working with some of the best colorists and sound teams in the world to take everything to the absolute maximum level. That’s what they did here.
The Wachowskis personally oversaw the restoration process very carefully. This isn’t one of those situations where they just throw a movie onto Blu-ray and call it a day. They really took the time to elevate it like a piece of art.
The new 4K restoration of Speed Racer arrives on digital and 4K UHD Blu-ray May 19, 2026.
