Indie Insanity, Slick Schemes, and a Story That Still Shakes Utah

This week on See It or Skip It, the group chat is loud, and the popcorn is hot. I’m joined by UFCA Members Rebecca Frost from the Geekshow Podcast and TV Show In Space, plus UFCA Critic Tracy Mangum. Join in on the fun as we cover “Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie”, Glenn Powell in “How To Make A Killing”, and investigate the new Elizabeth Smart documentary with one of the featured interviewees of the show, ABC4 Good Things Utah Co-Creator and Host Nicea DeGering. It’s a plethora of pics, which one are you choosing?

Based on the 2017 show, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol star as best friends and roommates who devise a number of schemes in the hopes of getting their band booked to play a show at the Rivoli. But when Matt accidentally discovers time travel, sending them back to 2008. The two’s friendship will be challenged by the possibility of changing their future.

I had a great time watching this. It has a fun indie feel with great jokes throughout. Does it have literally anything to do with the band “Nirvana”? No. But that only makes me laugh more.

How To Make A Killing (R)

Where to Watch: Theaters

Directed By:

John Patton Ford

Starring:

Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Topher Grace, Zach Woods

Genre:

Dark Comedy, Crime

Glen Powell seems to have a particular fondness for characters who have to go undercover and infiltrate groups. Whether they be people looking to acquire a Hitman, going incognito to win a Football game, or, in this case, to murder his wealthy estranged family to move up in the line of inheritance.

When opportunity meets preparation, Becket Redfellow seizes the moment to potential inheret everything. The story is narrated through Becket as he relives his crimes while talking to a priest in prison. Things become complicated as he becomes close to some of his would-be victims, and life begins to take shape in ways that might make his plan seem moot to a point.

This was an alright time at the theaters, while Powell is an incredibly charismatic actor, this type of role seems to be giving diminishing returns every time he rehashes tropes and characters we have already seen him in. Margaret Qualley is a captivating foil to his plans, playing a quietly sinister friend who’s on to him. There’s a lot of good humor coming from supporting cast members,s particularly Zach Woods, but ultimately the story begins to turn into a parody of itself, and in the end left me wondering how we got there.

A Harrowing and honest look into the events from and after the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. I was impressed by both the integrity of this but also how personal it felt as the subject of the documentary was involved from the start.
