“Lightning & Thunder,” or Mike and Claire Sardina, were a midwestern family that had a passion for being on the stage. They’d both performed on their own, doing various covers from popular artists, but nothing was as big as their Neil Diamond cover band, which made them a grassroots sensation in their local area.
Based on the documentary titled the same, “Song Sung Blue” brings the voice and stardom of Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, in a music biopic that gives a unique twist on the genre, while telling a beautiful story about the power of music and the strength of a couple who found their other half.
Both Jackman and Hudson are at the top of their game, with the best chemistry between stars I’ve seen this year. They make Mike and Claire Sardina feel like they could be your family. That you know these people in your life and are all the more happy that they found their passion in music. Director Craig Brewer taps into his own version of a John Carney sequence that was my favorite part of the film. As Mike and Clair introduce their daughters for the first time, and begin to play music together, finding the stream of music consciousness and vibe that brings the entire house into the fun.
What unfolds throughout the story is not only true but even stranger than fiction. It can feel like a jarring tonal shift that not everyone will go along with at first. But the performances by Jackman and Hudson elevate the material even further and make “Song Sung Blue” the perfect film to watch over the holiday break with your family and in theaters.
