“Eternity” centers around a heavenly love triangle that has Elizabeth Olsen faced with an impossible choice: spending eternity with her husband (Miles Teller) or taking a chance with her first husband, who passed away more than 60 years ago (Callum Tuener). Yes, these three are dead, now in holding while they decide which “eternity” they want to permanently dwell in, but with whom? Bringing a lighthearted yet earnest look at love and relationships, I found “Eternity” to go by in a breeze, with beautiful set design, unique concepts, and brilliant performances from all three leads. It is a perfect watch for your Thanksgiving weekend.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (PG-13)

Where to Watch: Theaters

Directed By:

Rian Johnson

Starring:

Daniel Craig, Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close

Genre:

Comedy, Mystery, Whodunnit

All media courtesy of Netflix

Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back on the beat, stepping into a new maze of lies where every smile hides a secret. This time, the mystery becomes ungodly as he investigates the murder of a local church’s minister (Josh Brolin), uncovering a connection to the supernatural, and testing the faith of the man everyone thinks committed this murder (Josh O’Connor).

“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” continues to deliver entertaining and expertly crafted mysteries with director Rian Johnson veering more serious in this 3rd chapter. But while the mystery is captivating, it is more predictable than the first two. That doesn’t make the viewing a loss due to incredible performances from O’Connor and, particularly, Glenn Close.

Zootopia 2 (PG)

Where to Watch: Theaters

Directed By:

Jared Bush, Byron Howard

Starring:

Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan

Genre:

Animation

Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are on the hunt for a new mystery that may change Zootopia forever. Partnerships are tested, new species revealed, and the puns only get punnier in a deserving sequel, even if it comes to us a few years too late.

The animation is crisp, the jokes nonstop, but the villain is less effective than we had in the first film, and the sequel does try to relive the original film in visual callbacks and narrative tropes that I wasn’t completely here for. It does build the characters we love, but the story, more than anything, feels the same, and for a 10-year wait, it should be anything but.

Our Stranger Things gang is all grown up (whether the show likes it or not), and we have finally arrived at the big finale of “Stranger Things” (Well, at least Part 1.). The first 4 episodes, focusing on reintegrating us into the world and centering specifically on Will, are ripe with emotional set-ups and a cliffhanger that will make you have to think back on 4 seasons of a show that started almost a decade ago.

I wish I could say this is a great start to the final season, but the special effects feel weaker, the actors clearly have outgrown their character ages, and not enough momentum is made until the 4th episode just to keep you subscribing for the second part this Christmas, and the finale on New Year’s Day.

If you can wait to see the season until New Year’s, it’ll at least save you from having to pay multiple months to watch one season of television; otherwise, this is for the ones who want to engage in the conversation.
