“Predator: Badlands”, “Die My Love”, “Nuremberg” and More Reviewed

On this early See It or Skip It, Patrick Beatty and Rebecca Frost break down a big lineup of things to watch this week, from alien rights of passage in “Predator Badlands”, to the gritty sports biopic “Christy” starring Sydney Sweeney, the psych-drama “Die My Love” with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, the gothic retelling of “Frankenstein”, and the war-era thriller “Nuremberg” with Russell Crowe and Rami Malek.

While not as unique and surprising as the previous film “Prey”, “Predator: Badlands” delivers on the visuals, the action, and a dash of heart & humor.

Elle Fanning is the standout with her “manic pixie synthetic girl” performance. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, the Predator “Dek”, will divide the fans who are used to a less emotional and more effective villain. I likened him immediately to what we’ve seen with “The Mandalorian,” just with more brutality in his fighting. The blueprint is all there; he even has an ugly/adorable companion to keep him company and serve as the “Pet The Dog” moment.

The big question is, will people show up in November for a film clearly meant for the Summer movie season? It would’ve been a top performer had it taken a spot in July or August, but for the season we are in, and the fact that there have been 8 other films that mostly have only tarnished the franchise, the real hunt might be finding anyone still excited enough to buy a ticket.

“Nuremberg” explores WWII psychologist Douglas Kelley’s (Rami Malek) evaluations of Nazi leaders, including Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe), as the world begins to learn the depth of horror and depravity of what the Nazi’s did in concentration camps. Halfway through, the courtroom drama of the trials set in with Robert H. Jackson working with allied leaders to bring justice to the world, so that it may never happen again.

There’s a lot happening in this, and while the messaging and story continue to be timely and important, but it also often feels like a film put on by a substitute teacher to keep the class docile. Malek gives an impressive performance, as well as a surprisingly effective performance by Russell Crowe, but this will likely be a dad film you can take him to and have a conversation after.
