This week on See It or Skip It, film critics Patrick Beatty and Tracy Mangum dive into a lineup packed with high-stakes drama, sharp satire, and a touch of the bizarre.
Is “Death of a Unicorn”a magical must-watch or roadkill better left behind? Can “The Studio” shine in the spotlight, or does it belong on the cutting-room floor? And with “Adolescence” on Netflix, “The Pitt” on Max, and Apple TV’s “Severence” in the mix, we’re breaking down the best of what’s streaming.

When a father and his daughter accidentally kill a unicorn with their car, his ambitious boss sees a chance to harness its mystical healing powers—only to set off a chain of horrifying events. Both Tracy and Patrick enjoyed the gore and humor in the film, but agree it may not be the best A24 has been known to deliver.

In the four-episode Netflix crime drama “Adolescence”, the quiet life of 13-year-old Jamie Miller is upended when he is accused of murdering his classmate, Katie. As detectives piece together the truth, Jamie’s family is thrown into turmoil, struggling to reconcile the boy they know with the crime he’s suspected of committing.
The series unpacks the complexities of teenage identity in the digital age, exposing the unsettling influence of incel culture, social media, and toxic masculinity on young minds.
Both Tracy and Patrick believe this to be a master class in limited series television. There are impressive performances from the entire task, but the show ups the stakes and challenges by making every episode a continuous take, meaning everything must be perfect for an entire show without cutting away.

In “Severance”, employees at Lumon Industries undergo a controversial procedure that surgically divides their memories between work and personal life. By day, they are dedicated workers with no recollection of their outside lives; by night, they return home with no memory of their jobs. However, when one employee, Mark Scout, begins to question the true purpose of Severance, he unravels a chilling corporate conspiracy that blurs the line between identity, control, and free will.
This is a very fascinating and mysterious ride that will leave you wanting more after every episode. The performances are incredible, with standouts such as John Turturro, Adam Scott, and Christopher Walken. The way creator Ben Stiller can direct the episodes is unbelievably impressive.

“The Studio” explores the turbulent world of a Hollywood movie studio fighting to stay afloat amid the growing conflict between art and commerce. Through the perspective of a studio executive, the series delves into industry pressures, personal insecurities, and the high-stakes challenges of filmmaking.
This is a love-hate letter to Hollywood in all of the best ways. Both Tracy and Patrick loved the first two episodes now streaming on Apple TV+. Seth Rogan continues to impress with his unique career moves, but he shines in this show as its star. All the supporting cast are incredible, but Tracy and Patrick specifically call out how elaborate and unbelievable the celebrity cameos are.

The Pitt (TV-MA)

Where to Watch: MAX

R. Scott Gemmill
Starring:

Medical Drama

“The Pitt” is a medical drama set in a Pittsburgh hospital, depicting the daily lives of healthcare professionals as they navigate personal struggles, workplace dynamics, and the emotional challenges of caring for critically ill patients—all while showcasing the resilience demanded by their noble profession.
What some have called “The Bear” for medical dramas, “The Pitt” is told at a breakneck pace, and with real and suspenseful moments that are nonstop. This is a 15-episode series, which takes place within one shift in the ER, with every episode being an hour of that shift. Tracy believes specifically episodes 12 and 13 merit awards consideration, and both he and Patrick recommend checking it out.
