Marvel Studios has made its 2024 debut with ‘Echo’, centering on Maya Lopez AKA Echo, A Native American of the Choktaw Nation, and one of Marvel’s few deaf characters.
Maya was introduced to fans in 2021 with ‘Hawkeye‘ where we learn that Maya is the adopted daughter of “The Kingin” played by Netflix Daredevil’s Vincent D’Onofrio. Echo is a 5-episode series looking at Maya’s Native American roots, as well as re-introducing in a sense the brutal violence and expert fight choreography of the Daredevil series fans have been clamoring for.
There’s a line in most MCU content that it doesn’t cross regarding violence and blood. You’re immediately given a warning of graphic content with Echo to make sure it’s known “This ain’t you’re cookie-cutter superhero show”. It also sets a tone that what you’re going to see is brutal, and while I want to say Echo does everything it can with that warning, It seems to lose its momentum at the end.
Alaqua Cox is great as Maya. She brings a lot of humanity to the role, and she performs the physicality well. I think her and Wilson Fisks relationship is interesting, but there’s not a ton of it aside from the beginning and end. The fighting through the season does get a little stale, but you can only do so much with 5 episodes. There’s a lot to love with Echo’s supporting characters, the standout for me being Skully played by Graham Greene.
Overall, Echo is a little bit of the same thing we’ve come to expect with MCU Disney+ shows, but it certainly is nowhere near the dip in quality Secret Invasion brought. There are some interesting characters and dynamics that I want to see continued, but not sure if I need an Echo season 2.
